THE PERSON |
The capital of Prussia since the XIIIth century, Berlin became the capital
of then unified Germany only in 1871. It has seen the heyday of Imperial
Germany under the emperors Wilhelm (the 1st), Friedrich (the 3rd) and again
Wilhelm (the 2nd, aka "Kaiser Bill"), was not affected much by World War
I, became the centre of the first German democracy, the "Weimar Republic"
in the Roaring Twenties, was Hitler´s metropolis in the Thirties
(although he preferred the South German cities), and payed the price by
near complete destruction during the firestorms of World War II. And then
it became The Divided City for 44 years. 10 years after the Fall of the
Wall, the Federal Government of Bonn is supposed to move to the old/new
capital in 1999 - now Berlin is nicknamed the biggest construction site
in Europe, if not in the world...You´ll believe it if you look into
this "city scope" Web Site.
| An "interactive city map" can be found at the following site: City Map Berlin. To find the relevant section, enter the name of the street you want to go to. You can then move to adjacent areas by clicking on the compass rose. | |

The "Wrapped Reichstag"
Christo´s and Jeanne-Claude´s hommage to Parliament House
("Reichstag" in German) - after it burned down in 1933, the Nazis left
it a ruin because to them it was the symbol of the despised parliamentary
democracy of the Weimar Republic. It will become the seat of the German
parliament again in 1999. There is also a Wrapped
Reichstag Web Site.
