PLENARY DEBATE: "Do we need Grids and Stats?"

Discussants: Tom Ravenette and Richard Bell

Abstract
Personal Construct Psychology has long been associated with the application of Repertory Grids as if they were inseparable entities. The computerisation of grid analysis has certainly contributed to the popularisation of PCP. On the other hand, quite a few people have com-plained that the ubiquitous use of grids has obscured the real significance of Personal Con-struct Theory.

Richard Bell has developed successful computer programme packages for the analysis of grids (G-Pack, GridStat, and now GRIDSCAL, to be presented at this congress) and has also recommended "Using SPSS to Analyse Repertory Grid Data".

Tom Ravenette has "invented so many different ones and arrived at 'computer free' analyses", yet is "still critical of what (he sees) of  'orthodox' grids and practice" and consequently will offer a contrasting stance to that of Richard Bell.
