PLENARY DEBATE: "Personal Construct Theory and the constructivist family
- friends or fusion?"
Discussants: Gabriele Chiari and Jerald Forster
Abstract
The last two International Congresses on Personal Construct Psychology
(in Barcelona in 1995 and in Seattle in 1997) have devoted a considerable
amount of time and effort to the "postmodernist" rise of constructivism
and the idea of subsuming Personal Construct Theory under the label of
"constructivism", even to the extent of abandoning the name of the Interna-tional
Congress in favour of a "constructivist" one. This debate will resume this
issue.
Jerald Forster will present a position that argues for the amalgamation
of different construc-tivist perspectives. He would even go so far as to
include narrative and social constructionist perspectives. He will build
a case that this amalgamated family could represent a force for the evolution
of human consciousness.
Gabriele Chiari will decidedly argue in favour of the peculiarity of
PCT and of the possibility (and necessity) to elaborate it further in ist
own.
